Make Your Photographs
Look the Way You've Always
Wanted Them to Look.
Have you ever looked at the images other photographers are making and just thought, "How the heck are they doing that? My images don't look like that. Is it the camera? Is it something magic in post-production? I don't get it!" You can nail the technical stuff and get it all "right" and still not make your images look the way you want them to. And if they don't look that way, they won't feel that way.
ImageWork is an 18-lesson video series about the aesthetics of photography. In other words, what decisions can we make to make images look the way they do? There are a lot of answers to that question. Some of them involve depth of field, and some come from our choice of shutter speed or the way we use our optics or where we put the camera (this is a big one!). Others have to do with our choices in the digital darkroom. But most of the time it's the combination of all those things and more. And it's never a result of following the manual.
One of the problems with learning photography is that we too often start with the technical stuff. We need that. But it's not a very creative approach. Your photographs can come out of the camera technically perfect—and perfectly bland. So can mine.
At some point, we all need to step back and say, OK, but why does this photograph look the way it does? What makes the image work? What choices were made with the camera to make the most of the light, time, or space that the photographer had to work with? And what was done in post-production to make it look so much better than the lackluster RAW file that came out of my camera? ImageWork will teach you to do that and find more creative possibilities in the answers.

Lightroom Essentials Video
Not sure you know Adobe Lightroom well enough to take this course? You probably do, but this 55-minute video will catch you up quickly.
"OMG! WOW! I’m only 3 lessons in and I’m blown away by what I’ve watched so far. This is THE perfect course for me. Without a doubt, 5 stars for sure! "
~ Coreena Vieth
Praise for ImageWork
"I’ve subscribed to all of the courses David has offered these past few years. This course stands head and shoulders above the others. As for the Lightroom segments in each lesson, there are plenty of courses on LR out there but none of them go into the depth of why, what and when the way this course does. If you liked the others, you’ll love this one. 5 stars, but only because I can't give it 6." - Steve Kalman
Can't even count the things I've learned.
"This is priceless! Thank you for this fantastic course! I thoroughly enjoyed ImageWork and was truly genuinely absorbed more than I have been in other courses. I have watched every episode several times, and every time I watch them, I continue to learn new things, and have more a-ha! moments. I can’t even count on two hands the things I learned in each individual lesson, let alone the entire course.” - Shauna G.
Like nothing else I've seen. Priceless!
"ImageWork is like nothing else I’ve seen. It’s absolutely unique in the sense that you open the doors to the whole process, which other photographers are not so inclined to do. I’ve never seen another course like this and I am learning so much. Priceless!" - Nathalie Todd
Bold. A call to be fully engaged.
"ImageWork is bold. It calls us to be fully engaged in our image making - ask questions, make choices, be intentional. I am challenged and inspired to go out and do the work to get images that reflect what I see and how I feel about the scenes I am witness to! Thank you for being a mentor to me and so many others. 5 stars from me!” - Anne Groton
Chock-full of important lessons.
"This was a terrific course–one of the best on-line photography courses that I’ve ever taken–and one that I will take a few times as I critique some of my favorite images to learn how I might make them even stronger. Chock-full of content, important lessons, and concepts, it is money well spent and it definitely helps me take a deeper dive as I pursue my artistic journey.” - Geoff Grant
One of the most impactful courses I've ever taken.
"ImageWork is incredible! It was just what I was looking for to increase my confidence as a photographer and storyteller, and to make my photographs more compelling. As I went through the course, I could sense a tangible change in how I approached each picture, how I thought about composition and timing, and how I used the tools at my disposal to enhance the final image. This is easily one of the most impactful courses I've ever taken, because in just a few short weeks I could see the transformation in my instincts as a photographer. ImageWork is truly an eye-opener and has already made a difference in how I think about making photographs. Thank you, David! I wish I had taken this course 10 years ago! - Sid De
My favourite course.
"I really, really, love these videos. I think this is my favorite course of yours I've taken. You have always been great about making me dig deeper while reading through your books/ courses/ emails/ blog but there was something about working on your images while listening to you that took this all to another level for me. I've been photographing for a few years and have a good grasp of how to work my camera, but this gave me new things to work on and develop in my journey as an artist.” - Koren Smith
Transformational!
"This new course was transformational to my photography! ImageWork is one of the many courses and workshops I’ve done. I can’t believe how it sewed together so many pieces from all of them into one experience. Amazing! If the only things you learn from ImageWork are the 7 key in field decisions along with 7 main processing criteria, it would be money well spent. Thank you! This was the course I didn’t know I was waiting for.” - Sarah Dolliver
Most effective online course I've done.
This course was incredible. A whole new world of opportunities has opened up as I learned how to make adjustments to my images that accentuate the mood and story as intended. So inspiring! ImageWork is the most effective online course I’ve done. I can’t believe that I could immediately apply the concepts and skills and get instant results! How exciting to see that I could immediately apply the adjustments to my images and get great results! I can't wait to see what happens with some consistent practice. Thank you!” - Lisa Wile

Learn to Make an ImageStory
"A great photograph tells a story!" I hear it all the time. But ask most photographers, even those who call themselves "visual storytellers," and they have a tough time even telling you what makes an engaging story or how. ImageStory can now be yours for $100 less than the regular tuition when you add it to your ImageWork enrollment.
In 7 video episodes you'll learn to:
Understand the power, structure, and elements of story and what makes an engaging story.
Learn to identify characters and relationships and choose moments that build empathy and connection.
Understand the power of a moment well chosen, the implication of action, and the role of conflict.
Learn practical ways to engage the imagination with theme, mystery, and symbolism.
Integrate your use of gear & technique with creating a narrative experience and pull the viewer in.
Begin to tell fuller stories by using sequences and the photographic essay.
Harness the power of juxtaposition, humour, and the full gamut of human emotion.
Understand how to use the human need for resolution to build tension and longer, deeper, engagement.
Praise for ImageStory

An outstanding combination of photographic examples, experienced guidance about refining our choices, and a tangible passion to teach, that will help every kind of photographer express themselves with work that will have more impact.”
- Tricia Lombardi
"This was the course I’ve been waiting for! Even as a old school journalism graduate with a focus on photojournalism, this course gave me new ideas and creative concepts. Not limited to just one genre of photography, David shows us there are no boundaries when telling an Image Story and will be valuable to anyone wanting to create images that speak to viewers and draw on their emotions.”
- Karin Smith
"An amazing course. I am always amazed at how clearly David is able to convey complicated processes. David duChemin is a master storyteller, so when he describes his process of visual storytelling, we are wise to stop and listen. In ImageStory, duChemin brilliantly translates the vital storytelling lessons he has learned over the years into 7 great videos. I can't wait to put this into use on my next photography journey!”
- Michael Bonocore
“It’s one thing to use a camera, and another thing to be able to use that camera to tell a story to engage and captivate your viewers. Storytelling is the unsung hero of photography and David duChemin knows his stuff! ImageStory will help you make photographs that connect on a much deeper level.”
- Paul Nicklen, National Geographic Photographer
Some Good Questions
You say ImageWork is a course about fundamentals; do you cover advanced techniques, too?
I don't really believe in the idea of "advanced techniques." I believe there are "fringe techniques" and "obscure techniques" and there's definitely a place for those for the photographers who want them. But I think all photographers need to understand the fundamentals and that mastery and creative application of those is a far, far greater payoff in terms of what our images look like, what they say, and how they feel. It's not about how advanced the technique is; it's about how well you use those techniques and why. If you can expose and focus your camera, you're ready to understand and use the other tools of this craft with much greater creativity. 99% of my own work uses these fundamentals and nothing more. Think of this as advanced thinking about fundamental techniques, it'll take you further.
What if I don't use Lightroom?
This course was designed knowing that about 98% of my audience uses Adobe Lightroom. But this is not a course designed to “teach you how to use Lightroom”. Half of every lesson has nothing at all to do with post-production, but in those parts of the course that do discuss developing the image, I teach the bigger principles about where the eye goes, how to add mood, how to change the look of the light, contrast, etc. and almost any software can help with this kind of thing.
Yes, those using Lightroom (or PS or ACR) will get a little more out of it because there are some extra tips they’ll learn, and there is a bonus video that helps those using LR to get up to speed that non-LR users won’t find as helpful. The DNG files I provide will still be useful to you, though you won’t be able to see the adjustments in the AFTER files because those would need LR or Adobe Camera Raw to read them. But you'll still be able to open the raw files and follow along and experiment in your own software of choice.
If you have watched the first lesson (above) you’ll get a sense of how I teach and whether you feel you can apply the principles to whatever software you use. For those using Photoshop / Adobe Camera Raw, it’s easy. Others using Capture One have said the lessons are easily adaptable. Here's what one of the early users said:
"As a professional photographer, as well as being a Capture One user, I was concerned about ImageWork being so Lightroom-heavy, as I wasn't convinced that I'd grasp anything new or useful. As usual, David surprised me yet again. Not only did the Lightroom (darkroom) principles easily translate and apply directly to Capture One, but I'm also reminded of just how important it is to guide the viewer's eye through an image, and that the image tell a story. Well done, David!” - Jeff Petry
I am convinced that where the sections of each lesson concern developing the image, the principles are the most important part. Software changes. Heck, even Lightroom changed right in the middle of me making this course! The HOW is always evolving, so I concentrate on WHY. My big question is always “what effect are we trying to create here?” not “what sliders should we be moving?”
Anyone that is willing to give it some thought should be able to adapt the principles I teach in ImageWork to their software of choice as long as that software allows you to make global adjustments as well as local adjustments. And if you decide to give it a try and you really feel like you’re not learning, let me know within 30 days and we’ll happily refund you.
How long will ImageWork take?
One of the things I keep hearing from my students is that my MentorClasses courses are so thorough and robust that they still haven't finished them. There are many reasons for that, but when I designed ImageWork, I wanted to make a course that was less overwhelming, perhaps a little more focused on the practical, and less of a time commitment. I wanted to give you a series of short videos that you own, that don't give you a bunch of homework, but that still give you really clear training in your craft. How long will it take you to watch 18 videos that are all around 20 minutes long? If you sit down and binge-watch them, it's about 6 hours. But I'm guessing you'll watch one and then let things sink in. And if you're the type who wants to go all-in, my RAW files are all included so you can follow along in the segments about development. And since the videos can be viewed in any order, it's not about completing the course but about learning what's helpful and putting it into action. The total running time for ImageWork is roughly 360 minutes. The total running time for ImageStory is 170 minutes. Together that's almost 9 hours, all tightly scripted and edited, no fluff. How do I access these courses? On your laptop, tablet, or mobile device, you'll sign in to the course platform with login credentials you create. The moment you enroll, the entire course content will be available to you to stream or download as you prefer. How do I pay? Are there options? Is it secure?
I want to make this as easy as possible as I can for you. We use both Stripe and PayPal to accept payments. Both are globally-trusted payment gateways that give us access to none of your personal information. When you click the Enroll Now button, you'll be taken to one single payment page that gives you options for Stripe and PayPal. Super easy and totally secure.Wait, aren't you Canadian? Why are prices in USD?
Indeed I am. Sorry. Because the majority of my audience comes from around the world, USD is more easily understood by more people. Also, when I charge in CAD, people start asking if they can just pay with maple syrup, beaver pelts, or canoes instead, and my wife says if I bring one more rack of moose antlers into the igloo there's going to be trouble, eh?
And you say there's a money-back guarantee?
There is. Because I'd rather you take risks with your creativity, not your education, I stand behind what I've created for you. If you don't feel this course can help you make stronger photographs, just let me know within 30 days of enrolling and I'll be happy to give you a refund. No awkward questions, and no refund-shaming.

Often the easiest way to determine if something is for us to read about what others have experienced.
Here are a few more reviews from past students of ImageWork"Even after the first lesson, my photos became better. After the whole series, I feel like I have a much better sense of what makes a photo stand out and how I might get mine to do that. These tips weren't mystical--many are staples of composition--but the combination of using the example, hearing the story behind the capture, watching the editing process, using the workbook, and David's excellent teaching style really helped make things click in ways that moved my photography up a notch. The Lightroom tutorial is offered almost as a throwaway, yet it was incredibly helpful. Highly recommend."
~ Courtney Wilson"I took this class a year ago and got a lot out of it. A Lot. That was the first time around. Lately, I have been going through the lessons again and I find that, after a year of working with my camera and my own images, I am getting so much more out of the lessons this second time around. So I am finding the lessons even more valuable! A total bonus!!!"
~ Marny Stevenson"This course was definitely worth the money. I am a perpetual novice photographer, just to share my POV. I love David's thoughtful approach both in creating the images and processing them. His questions can apply to any type of photography, because they are all about what you want the viewer to see in your images and how to guide the viewer to see your intentions. Some of the episodes I have watched several times, because there is so much to digest."~ Holly Kilpatrick"This was one of the best courses I have taken in photography in a long time. I have often looked for a course that breaks down the decision making both while taking the photo and then in post production and it is really hard to find. David takes each photo in turn and breaks it down into elements that make sense and can then be used in your own photography. I could watch these classes again and again - very well presented and laid out. Thank you for thinking about this approach - has made me think very differently about how I photograph and then how I edit."~ Nicola Short"David's ImageWork class was a lot of fun. He gives deep insights into the creation and editing of his excellent pictures. David has a lot of fun teaching the tips & tricks that will surely give every photographer new inspiration and insights. I really enjoyed being able to watch the videos as often as I wanted and not having to memorize all the details the first time. Thank you David!"
~Niklas Loges"The course expanded my knowledge of camera and post processing techniques but, more importantly, it changed the way I thought about how to use and integrate them. It made me better able to see the potential in a shot and made me think about what draws me to a photo. And if you're wondering if you need Lightroom to get something out of the course, don't worry. David is teaching principles, not software. I don't use Lightroom and the course transferred to the editing software I use just fine."~Charles Prokop"For me, ImageWork makes me a more thoughtful photographer. It provides a language and templates to establish a vision, attempt to capture that vision with my camera, and carry that vision into processing. David is a wonderful teacher and one whose photography and approach I enjoy, which makes the class even more effective! ImageStory helped me shift my thinking about photography. I didn't realize I was typically hunting "pretty" pictures, but after working through the course I now try to focus on story-telling. I love it when a course helps you fix a challenge you didn't know you were facing!"
~ Michael Nelson"This course is really amazing - it took me through the whole process from capturing the image to the final work. That was something I badly needed, to start thinking at different level with my image work process :) Definitely recommended for anyone interested in creating more meaningful works."~ Tomasz Pawelec"This course was perfect for me during the Covid-19 shut downs. I've taken other online courses but none that were so easy to follow and understand. The variety of each lesson was excellent. The surprise for me was how much I learned from the Lightroom sections of each lesson. I had just completed a brief Lightroom course by Zoom. Actually going step by step through the editing of each photo in Lightroom strengthened my understanding of the complexities of LR and gave me a great deal of confidence in the editing of my own photos. I plan to review the course work again as I'm sure there were things I missed the first time around."~ Eve Tal"Several years ago and after decades of taking ok and sometimes even nice pictures I started to ask myself what the difference really was between the two. What is it that makes an image work and worth looking at for a bit longer? How can I achieve that intentionally, not just by accident? On my search for the answer I came across Davids work and have stuck around ever since. And I gradually came closer to the answer - until this course rounded it all off for me and basically answered the question in 18 well communicated lessons.David provides clear reasons why he used certain camera settings and post processing tools to achieve his intentions with a photograph. That helped me look at my own photos from a rather different perspective. Would I recommend the course? Absolutely!"~ Julia ZimmermannMore Questions? Need Help?
